NETGEAR Smart Switches support Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). A trap is an SNMPv1 or SNMPv2 message that is sent to a host (such as a computer or server) when an event occurs on the switch. A trap flag is a condition or event that triggers the trap. An example of a trap flag is an event involving authentication, such as when a user attempts to access the switch UI but does not provide a valid user name and password. You can enable or disable individual trap flags.
Before a host can receive a trap, you must add a community and trap configuration that defines the host.

On a Smart Switch with a Smart UI, to add a community, configure a trap configuration for a server with IP address 10.100.5.17, and enable a trap flag for a Link Up/Down event:
- Connect your computer to the same network as the switch.
You can use a WiFi or wired connection to connect your computer to the network, or
connect directly to a switch that is off-network using an Ethernet cable. - Launch a web browser.
- In the address field of your web browser, enter the IP address of the switch.

The Device Admin Password page displays. - Enter one of the following passwords:
- Enter your device admin password.
- If you previously managed the switch through the Insight app or Cloud portal,
enter the Insight network password for the last Insight network location.
- Click the Login button.
The Dashboard page displays. - Select System > Protocols > SNMP > Community Configuration.
- Click the Add New button.
- Set up an SNMP community by completing the following settings:
- Management Station IP: Type 10.100.5.0.
- Management Station IP Mask: Type 255.255.255.0.
- Community String: Type SNMP-community as the name.
- Access Mode: Select ReadWrite from the menu.
- Status: Select Enabled from the menu.
- Click the Save button.
Your settings are saved. - Select System > Protocols > SNMP > Trap Configuration.
- Click the Add New button.
- Set up a trap configuration by completing the following settings:
- Recipients IP: Type 10.100.5.17.
- Version: Select SNMPv2 from the menu.
- Community String: Type SNMP-community.
- Status: Select Enabled from the menu.
- Click the Save button.
Your settings are saved. - Select System > Protocols > SNMP > Trap Flags.
- Set the trap flag by clicking the Link Up/Down toggle so that it displays purple and positioned to the right.
This is the default setting for the Smart Switch. - Click the Apply button.
