What is the difference between primary and trusted devices used for my NETGEAR account two-factor authentication (2FA)?

When you enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your NETGEAR account, the device that you use to set up 2FA is considered your primary device. After 2FA is set up, you can add up to five trusted devices.

  • Your primary device is the device that receives 2FA login push notifications to authenticate your identity. This should be a device that you typically have with you, like your smartphone.
  • Your trusted devices are devices that do not require 2FA to log into your NETGEAR account. Because your trusted devices don’t need 2FA to access your account, we recommend that you choose devices that are not at risk of being lost or stolen, like a tablet that you only use at home.

If you do not have access to your primary device, you can send 2FA login codes to the email address registered to your account instead. If you replace, lose, or no longer have access to your primary device, we recommend that you remove the device from your NETGEAR account.
