The VPN Service function allows you to access your home network securely through the Internet when you are away from home. In addition, when you are out of the country, you can use the VPN Service to access Internet sites or services that you may not usually be able to due to geographic limitations. To use the VPN service, you need to connect to your router through the Internet. There are two ways to locate your router:
- Using the Dynamic DNS service (suggested)
- An alternative option is through your router's public Internet address
Please make sure you either have the Dynamic DNS service enabled or the static IP address settings for your Internet connection. The VPN service only works with OpenVPN clients and will not work with any other VPN clients. If you need instructions for using a different device (other than your iOS device), see the following:

To use the VPN service on your Nighthawk router with your iOS device:
- Launch an Internet browser and type http://www.routerlogin.net into the address bar.
If you are having problems accessing routerlogin.net, see Router login page cannot be displayed or is blank.
- Enter the router username and password when prompted.
The default user name is admin. The default password is password.
- Tap on Advanced > Advanced Setup> VPN Service.
- Select Enable VPN Service and tap Apply.
- Download the OpenVPN configuration package by clicking on the For Smart Phone button.
- Once downloaded, extract smartphone.zip.
- If you do not already have OpenVPN installed, find and install OpenVPN via the App Store or iTunes.
- Connect your iOS device to your computer. Tap Apps, and then OpenVPN. Tap Add File. Locate the files that you extracted from step 3.
- Open the OpenVPN app and you will automatically see the .ovpn file (ex. client3).
- Tap the (+) button.
- Slide the button to connect to the selected profile.
- VPN is now established, and the "Connected" status is displayed.
The "VPN" indicator on the top bar of the screen indicates the VPN connection has been established. You can now access your devices at home through your iOS device anywhere.
Note: Make sure TUN/TAP port numbers not the same when using both PC and smartphone for openVPN at the same time.
Default values:
TUN mode - 12973 (for smartphone)
TAP mode – 12974 (for computer)
