A Virtual Private Network (VPN) lets you use the internet to securely access your network when you are not home. This type of VPN access is called a client-to-gateway tunnel. The computer is the client and the router is the gateway. This article provides steps on how set up VPN server on Nighthawk router using a MAC OS computer.
To enable VPN service on router using MAC OS computer:
- Use a MAC OS computer that is connected to your router via wired or wireless connection.
- Open your internet browser and visit http://www.routerlogin.com or http://www.routerlogin.net.
- On the authentication window, type the default username: admin and the default password: password.
- Click OK or LOG IN.
NETGEAR genie displays.
- Click ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > VPN Service.
- Select Enable VPN Service and click Apply.
Note: If you need to change the Service Type, Service Port or connection access, do it before clicking Apply.
- Click For non-Windows to download the VPN configuration.
- Open the Tunnelblick VPN client on your MAC OS computer. If you do not have a Tunnelblick client, download the software at: https://tunnelblick.net/downloads.html.
- Click I have configuration files.
- Click OK.
- Create a new folder on your MAC OS computer.
- Open the downloaded file from your Nighthawk router and transfer the files to the newly created folder.
- Rename the folder and add .tblk at the end.
- Open the folder to install the configuration file and select All Users or Only Me. Type the computer password if necessary, then click OK.
- Click the Tunnelblick icon at the top of the screen and click Connect.
- Wait for the VPN to connect.
You are now connected to the VPN tunnel using Tunnelblick client software.
Note: Make sure TUN/TAP port numbers not the same when using both PC and smartphone for openVPN at the same time.
Default values:
TUN mode - 12973 (for smartphone)
TAP mode – 12974 (for computer)
