Overview:
The NETGEAR R7000 "Nighthawk" is heavily optimized for online gaming and media streaming from the Web, and employs several settings that are configurable for maximum performance. Depending on how you configure the router, some of these settings may actually affect the performance in other areas.
Symptoms:
- video or media streaming problems
- online games lag issues
Resolution:
Note: Each of steps is a separate attempt to fix the problem. If one step works, you do not need to proceed with the other steps.
- If you are having trouble streaming video or gaming online, and you actively do both, you can first try disabling both QoS (Quality of Service) and WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) settings. For many users who both participate in online gaming and video streaming, disabling these settings entirely can sometimes improve performance in certain setups.
- If you primarily use the router for online gaming, you will want to configure upstream QoS. This will assign a high priority to this type of traffic, but may affect browsing and download speeds on other devices.
- If you primarily use the router for video/media streaming from the Web, you will want to configure downstream QoS. This will assign a high priority to this type of traffic, but may affect your online gaming and upload speeds.
- If you are still seeing performance issues, you can also try enabling both upstream and downstream QoS and configuring rules for both, following the steps above.
- If you continue to have issues, please contact NETGEAR Support.
