VLAN Routing is supported on a Smart Switch that runs firmware v6.x.x.x or a later version.

This article describes the steps to configure VLAN Routing on a NETGEAR Smart Switch with a traditional user interface (UI). If your Smart Switch has a Smart UI, see How do I configure VLAN Routing on a Smart Switch with a Smart user interface?.

To enable routing, configure a VLAN, and configure VLAN Routing on a Smart Switch with a traditional UI:

  1. Determine the IP addresses that you want to assign to the VLAN interface on the switch.
    For the switch to route between VLANs, a VLAN interface must have an IP address. When the switch receives a packet that is destined for a VLAN or subnet, the switch forwards the packet to the destination VLAN interface  based on the information in the routing table. The destination VLAN interface forwards the packet to the port to which the end device is attached.
  2. Log in to the switch:
    1. Connect your computer to the same network as the switch.
      You can use a WiFi or wired connection to connect your computer to the network, or connect directly to a switch that is off-network using an Ethernet cable.
    2. In the address field of your web browser, enter the IP address of the switch.

      The Device UI login page displays.
    3. Enter one of the following passwords:
      * Enter your device admin password.
      * If you previously managed the switch through the Insight app or Cloud portal, enter the Insight network password for the last Insight network location.
    4. Click the Go button.
      The System Information page displays.
  3. Enable routing on the switch:
    1. Select Routing > IP > IP Configuration.
    2. Select the Routing Mode Enable radio button.
      You must enable routing for the switch before you can route through any of the interfaces. Routing is also enabled or disabled per VLAN interface. The default value is Disable.
    3. Click the Apply button.
      Your settings are saved.
  4. Create a VLAN:
    1. Select Switching > VLAN > Basic > VLAN Configuration.
    2. In the VLAN ID field, specify the VLAN identifier for the new VLAN.
    3. In the VLAN Name field, specify a name for the VLAN.
      When you create a VLAN on the VLAN Configuration page, by default, the type that is assigned is Static.
    4. Click the Add button.
      Your settings are saved.
  5. Make the VLAN a Routing VLAN:
    1. Select Routing > VLAN > VLAN Routing.
    2. From the VLAN menu, select the VLAN that you just created.
    3. In the IP Address field, type the IP address that you want to assign to the VLAN routing interface.
    4. In the Subnet Mask field, type the subnet mask that you want to assign to the VLAN routing interface.
    5. Click the Add button.
      Your settings are saved. The VLAN routing interface is added to the configuration and becomes active.
