Your computer should detect your NETGEAR USB WiFi adapter within 15 seconds of plugging it in. You might see a window appear or hear a system sound to indicate that the adapter is detected, and the adapter LED should turn on.

Most NETGEAR USB WiFi adapters have minimum system requirements. Your adapter might require a certain version of Microsoft Windows (like Windows 10) or a certain type of USB port (like USB 2.0). Make sure that your computer meets the adapter’s minimum system requirements before troubleshooting further.

If your computer doesn’t detect your adapter, try the following troubleshooting steps.

Download the latest software for your adapter

Make sure that you use the latest software for your specific NETGEAR USB WiFi adapter. You can download the latest adapter software from the NETGEAR Download Center.

Update Microsoft Windows

If your computer's Microsoft Windows installation isn't up to date, some devices and features might not work correctly. For more information, see Microsoft's Update Windows support article.

Connect the adapter without its cradle or extension cable

If your USB WiFi adapter included a cradle or extension cable, try to connect the adapter directly to your computer. If your computer detects the adapter when you connect it directly, the cradle or extension cable might be faulty.

Use a different USB port

Move your USB WiFi adapter to a different USB port on your computer. If your adapter works fine in a different USB port, you might have a faulty USB port.

Unplug other USB devices

If you have a lot of USB devices connected to your computer already, try disconnecting some of them. Some computers can only power a certain number of USB devices at the same time.
