Before enabling jumbo frames, read the article Guidance on the use of jumbo frames for more information on how jumbo frames work and when it is suitable for your deployment.
The maximum transmission unit (MTU) size, also called maximum frame size, is the maximum Ethernet frame size that an interface can support. The frame size includes the Ethernet header, CRC, and payload. The frame size is defined in IEEE 802.3 and calculated with the Layer 2 Ethernet frame and the optional IEEE 802.1Q VLAN/QoS tag.
If clients are set to an MTU size of 9000, it is a good practice to set the MTU size on the switch to a slightly higher value, such as 9216, to allow for the additional header size from clients.
On NETGEAR Smart Switches, the frame size range is from 1522 to 10000. The default frame size is 1522. You cannot set the frame size for individual interfaces. The frame size applies to all interfaces on the Smart Switch.
To configure an MTU of 9216 (a jumbo frame) for all interfaces on a Smart Switch using either a Smart UI or traditional UI:
- Connect your computer to the same network as the switch.
You can use a WiFi or wired connection to connect your computer to the network, or
connect directly to a switch that is off-network using an Ethernet cable. - Launch a web browser.
- In the address field of your web browser, enter the IP address of the switch.

On a Smart Switch with a Smart UI, the Device UI login page displays.
On a Smart Switch with a traditional UI, the Device Admin Password page displays. - Enter one of the following passwords:
- Enter your device admin password.
- If you previously managed the switch through the Insight app or Cloud portal,
enter the Insight network password for the last Insight network location.
- Do one of the following:
- On a Smart Switch with a Smart UI, click the Login button.
The Dashboard page displays. - On a Smart Switch with a traditional UI, click the Go button.
The System Information page displays.
- Select Switching > Ports > Port Configuration.
- In the Frame Size field, type 9216.
This frame size applies to all interfaces on the Smart Switch. - Do one of the following:
- On a Smart Switch with a Smart UI, click the Save button.
- On a Smart Switch with a traditional UI, click the Apply button.
Your settings are saved.
