This article describes how to migrate virtual machines running on Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 from an iSCSI LUN on ReadyDATA to an iSCSI LUN on ReadyNAS. Here we perform live storage migration - this allows us to migrate the virtual machines from the ReadyDATA to the ReadyNAS while the virtual machines are running.

In this example, the following iSCSI LUN exists on the ReadyDATA:

Inside this LUN are several virtual machines running on Hyper-V, seen below in Hyper-V Manager:

Here, we migrate the virtual machine called TerminalSRV1. The process can be repeated for all other virtual machines.

  1. On the ReadyNAS admin page, go to the iSCSI tab.
  2. Click New LUN.
  3. Enter the new LUN details and click Create. It is recommended to use a thick LUN with Bit Rot Protection disabled.

  4. Click New Group.
  5. Edit the name of the new LUN group if required and click Create. Here, we use the default name.

  6. Click on the LUN and choose Assign:

  7. At the prompt, choose to assign to the LUN group created in step 5 and click Apply.

  8. Click the Properties button beside the newly created LUN Group.
  9. Set Allowed Initiators to Selected and click the plus icon:

  10. In the Name field, enter the IQN of the Hyper-V host and click Create. If you are unsure of how to find this, please refer to Note 1 at the bottom of this article.

  11. Select the Allowed checkbox beside the IQN you added in the previous step and click Apply.

  12. On the Hyper-V host, open the iSCSI Initiator.
  13. In the Targets tab, enter the IP address or hostname of the ReadyNAS and click Quick Connect.
  14. When prompted, click Done.
    The Hyper-V host is now connected to both the ReadyDATA iSCSI LUN and the ReadyNAS iSCSI LUN:

  15. Open the Computer Management console.
    The newly added ReadyNAS LUN appears as an unknown disk.
  16. Right click the disk and select Online.

  17. Right click the disk again and select Initialize Disk.

    When prompted, choose GPT partition style and click OK.
  18. Right click the disk and click New Simple Volume.

  19. Follow the wizard to format the disk.
  20. We now have both iSCSI LUNs connected. The ReadyDATA LUN contains the virtual machines. The ReadyNAS LUN is empty and ready to accept migration of the virtual machines.

  21. Go to the Hyper-V Manager.
  22. Right click the virtual machine to be migrated and select Move:

  23. Select Move the virtual machine's storage and click Next:

  24. Choose from the options listed and click Next. Here, we move all files associated with the virtual machine.

  25. Click Browse:

  26. Select the iSCSI LUN on the ReadyNAS and click Select Folder:

  27. Click Next.
  28. Click Finish:

    The virtual machine is migrated from the ReadyDATA to the ReadyNAS.

 

Note 1 - How to find the IQN of a Hyper-V host.

  1. On the Hyper-V host, open the iSCSI Initiator.
  2. Go to the Configuration tab.
  3. The IQN is listed in the Initiator Name field where it can be selected and copied.
