This article describes how to migrate VMware virtual machines from an iSCSI LUN on ReadyDATA to an iSCSI LUN on ReadyNAS. Here we use vMotion - this allows us to migrate the virtual machines from the ReadyDATA to the ReadyNAS while the virtual machines are still running.

In this example, the following iSCSI LUN exists on the ReadyDATA:

Inside this LUN are several virtual machines running on VMware ESXi, seen below in the vSphere client:

Here, we migrate the virtual machine called TerminalSRV1. The process can be repeated for all other virtual machines.

  1. On the ReadyNAS admin page, go to the iSCSI tab.
  2. Click New LUN.
  3. Enter the new LUN details and click Create. It is recommended to use a thick LUN with Bit Rot Protection disabled.

  4. Click New Group.
  5. Edit the name of the LUN group if required and click Create. Here, we use the default name.

  6. Click on the LUN and choose Assign.

  7. At the prompt, choose to assign to the LUN group created in step 5 and click Apply.

  8. Click the Properties button beside the newly created LUN Group.
  9. Set Allowed Initiators to Selected and click the plus icon:

  10. In the Name field, enter the IQN of the VMware host and click Create. If you are unsure of how to find this, please refer to Note 1 at the bottom of this article.

  11. Select the Allowed checkbox beside the IQN you added in the previous step and click Apply:

  12. In the vSphere client, select the ESXi host and go to Configuration - Storage Adapters - Properties:

  13. On the Dynamic Discovery tab, click Add.
  14. In the iSCSI Server field, enter the hostname or IP address of the ReadyNAS and click OK. The Port field should remain as 3260.

  15. Click Close.
  16. When prompted to do a rescan of the host bus adapter, click Yes.
  17. Go to Configuration - Storage and click Add Storage:

  18. Select Disk/LUN and click Next:

  19. Select the recently created ReadyNAS iSCSI LUN and click Next:

  20. Choose your required file system and click Next. Here we use VMFS-5.

  21. The next page gives a review of the disk layout. Click Next:

  22. Enter a name for the storage and click Next:

  23. Select Maximum available space and click Next:

  24. Review the details and click Finish:

    The ESXi host is now connected to both the ReadyDATA iSCSI LUN and the ReadyNAS iSCSI LUN:

  25. Right click the virtual machine to be migrated and select Migrate:

  26. Select Change datastore and click Next:

  27. Select the virtual disk format. Here we use same format as source.
    Select the destination storage (the ReadyNAS iSCSI LUN in this case) and click Next:

  28. Click Finish:

    The virtual machine is migrated from the ReadyDATA to the ReadyNAS.

 

Note 1 - How to find the IQN of an ESXi host.

  1. In the vSphere client, select the ESXi host.
  2. Go to Configuration - Storage Adapters.
  3. Click Properties:

  4. The IQN is listed on the General tab in the Name field. Here it can be selected and copied.
