This article explains how to configure the Windows File History utility to back up to a ReadyNAS OS 6 system.

The Windows File History utility is available on:
- Windows 10
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 8
File History only backs up copies of files that are in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files that are available offline on your Windows computer. If you have files or folders elsewhere that you want backed up, you can add them to one of these folders. See https://windows.microsoft.com/en-ie/windows-8/set-drive-file-history.
To do a full system backup, use the Windows Backup. This is described in the How do I back up my Windows PC to a ReadyNAS OS 6 system using Windows Backup and Restore?
Create the destination share on the ReadyNAS:
1. Log on to the ReadyNAS admin page.
2. Go to Shares and click the New Share button.
3. Enter a name for the share.
4. Ensure Bit Rot Protection is disabled.
5. Set Snapshot Schedule to Never.
6. Enable the SMB protocol.
7. Click the Create button.
Restrict SMB access on the share on the ReadyNAS:
In this example, we want to allow access to the share for only one user, called john.
1. Go to the settings of the newly created share.
2. Click the Network Access tab.
3. Go to the SMB section.
4. Remove read/write access for Everyone.
5. Enable read/write access for the user. In this example, enable read/write access for the user called john.
6. Click OK.
Note: You may also use the ReadyNAS admin user to access the share.
Configure File History on Windows:
1. Click Start. Search for and open Control Panel:
2. From the Control Panel, open File History:
3. Click the Select drive button.
4. Click the Add network location button.
5. Enter the path to the share. This will be of the form IP_ADDRESSSHARE_NAME. In this example, it is 192.168.1.111WindowsBackup. Then click the Select Folder button.
6. If prompted for credentials, enter the details of the user. In this example, we can use the john user configured earlier or we can use the ReadyNAS admin user.
7. Click the OK button.
8. Now click the Turn on button.
File history is enabled. When the job has completed, the following screen displays.
