To access the main user interface (UI) or audio video (AV) UI of a NETGEAR fully managed switch (older models have a single UI only), you must know the IP address of the switch. If you are unsure of the IP address that is assigned to switch, you can connect to the switch through the console port and enter specific CLI commands to display the IP address.
To use CLI commands to display the IP address on a fully managed switch and then access the main UI or AV UI:
- Connect to the console port on the switch. Depending on the model of your switch, use one of the following types of console ports:
- DB9 RS232 console port
- Mini USB console port
- RJ-45 RS232 console port
Note 1: If your switch has both DB9 and mini USB console ports, pay attention to the console selector switch on the back panel. Select which console port is active.
Note 2: If your switch is in a stack, connect to the console port on the stack management switch. The stack management switch is indicated by an LED indicator.
- If you connect a computer to a console port on the switch, start a terminal emulation program:
- Windows: On a computer with a Windows operating system, you can use an application such as PuTTY, HyperTerminal, or Tera Term.
- Mac: On a computer with a Mac operating system, you can use an application such as ZTerm.
- Linux: On a computer with a Linux operating system, you can use an application such as Minicom.
- Configure the following settings:
- Baud rate: 115200 (some older models use a baud rate of 9600. The required baud rate is stated next to the console port on the switch.)
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bit: 1
- Flow control: None
- Enter admin as the user name, do not enter a password, and press Enter.
The default user name is admin and the default password is blank (that is, do not enter a password).
On first login, the switch forces you to specify a password. Subsequent times that you log in, you must use the password that you specified. - Enter one of the following commands to display the IP address assigned to the management VLAN.
The command that you must enter depends on the firmware version and the configuration that is applied to the switch.

- Log in to the switch’s main UI or AV UI by launching a web browser and entering http://<ipaddress> in the address field:
- Any Ethernet network port: Enter the IP address that is assigned to the management interface.
- Out-of-band port (service port): Enter the IP address that is assigned to the OOB port.
- At the user prompt, log in to the switch using the user name admin, the password that you specified on first login, and press Enter.
Troubleshooting:
- I have found the IP address of my switch, but when I try to access the UI, I am not prompted for a password.
Check if you can ping the IP address of the switch. If you cannot ping the switch, your computer might be configured in a different IP network than the switch. Try setting your computer with a static IP address in the same IP network as the switch. - I have found the IP address of my switch, but when I try to access the UI, my password is not accepted.
Try the default password, which is blank, that is, do not enter a password. If this fails, you can reset the switch to factory default settings to restore the password to the default. Note that doing so erases all configured settings on the switch.
