The WAC740 is intended for use with a controller, but can be accessed directly to perform certain management functions.
You can use direct access mode to perform the following tasks:
- Update the firmware when the WAC740 is not connected to a controller
- Change basic network settings, such as IP address settings, VLAN settings, or controller settings, when the WAC740 is not connected to a controller
- Retrieve crash logs after an unintended reboot or a software crash
WARNING: Using direct access mode requires performing a factory reset on your WAC740 access point. A factory reset returns your WAC740 access point to factory default settings and erases all runtime logs. Do not use direct access mode if you can accomplish the same tasks without it.
To use direct access mode:
- Connect the computer you are using to the WAC740 with an Ethernet cable.
- Power on the access point and wait until the Power LED is blinking and all other LEDs are off.
- Press the Reset button with a straightened paper clip and hold until all the LEDs turn off, about 15 seconds.
- Open the Network and Sharing Center (Windows) or the Network panel (OS X) on your computer and find the LAN that you created by connecting the WAC740 access point with your computer.
- Change the computer’s IP address to a static IP in the 192.168.0.x subnet, such as 192.168.0.10, and wait until the LED blink pattern stops changing.

192.168.0.160 is the default IP address of the WAC740 11AC Access Point. - When prompted, type admin as the user name and password as the password.
You are using a much simplified management interface in direct access mode. From here, you can update firmware, change network settings, or retrieve crash logs.
