Disk spin-down activates standby mode on your ReadyNAS disks after a period of inactivity.
Standby mode provides several benefits:
- Reduced power usage
- Lowered noise levels
- Extended disk life
Disks might take up to 10 seconds to recover from standby mode. This delay might cause some applications, such as databases and virtual machines, to time-out or return an error. We recommend disabling disk spin-down when these applications are active.
Power savings vary among disk drive models. A typical disk drive might use 5.3W during read and write operations, 3.4W when idle, and only 0.4W while in standby mode.
Disk spin-down is not supported on the following devices:
- 2U and 4U rackmount systems
- EDA expansion chassis
To change the disk spin-down settings:
- Log in to your ReadyNAS admin page.
- Click System > Power.
The page displays the power settings. - Expand the Disk Spin-down section.
- Select the Enable disk spin-down check box to enable spin-down.
- In the minutes of inactivity menu, select the inactivity period before disks enter standby mode.
- Click the Settings icon to open the calendar.
- Select the days and times to activate disk spin-down.
- Click the Apply button.
