On the ProSafe range of wireless controllers there is a High Density Bandwidth setting which is designed to provide higher throughput for wireless clients when a high number of wireless clients (more than 20) are connecting to the same access point or limited number of access points. For instance in a classroom, conference center or meeting room where all clients are demanding throughput at the same time such as watching streaming video, or peer to peer video.
By default the setting is Auto and should only be set to high in a high density environment. When configured to High it may decrease the range of the wireless network.
The setting is available in the web gui at Configuration - Wireless - Basic/Advanced - Wireless.
The different settings allow for the following actions:
High: With this option RTS/CTS retrys will be disabled, and should be used when lots of clients on same AP radio are doing high bandwidth application like watching streaming video.
Low: With this option RTS/CTS based retry will be enabled, and AP cell range will improve.
Auto: The software will decide to do RTS/CTS retrys, By default, it will be optimized for AP cell range and RTS/CTS enabled.
The setting itself is not configurable per access point, but per group of access points. It can be set under Basic if your access points are members of the basic group, or under Advanced if your access points are members of an advanced group.
To apply the setting to a single access point or to specific access points only, move those access points into their own group and apply the High Density Bandwith setting on that group. To edit the group membership of access points go to Configuration - WLAN Network - Managed AP List. Check the radio button for the AP you wish to edit, change the Group Name and click Apply.
