NETGEAR is aware of some issues when upgrading from firmware version 1.0.0.0 to anything newer on the GSS108E.
Adding a Static ARP Entry.
You may experience are due to timeouts when the device is unable to reply to an ARP request. This issue only occurs during the upgrade process.
If you are using Windows, you need to use the ProSAFE Plus utility version 2.3.19.
Note: You can also do so by adding a static ARP entry; follow the MS Technet Guide to do so.
If you are using Mac OS X, you need to add a static ARP entry to your computer.
- Open Launchpad.

- Find Terminal and select it.

- Type "sudo arp -d [ip-address]" to delete the existing entry. Replace [ip-address] is the IP of the GSS108E.
-
- When prompted, enter your account password.

- Type "sudo arp -s [ip-address] aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff" where [ip-address] is the IP and aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff is the MAC address of the GSS108E.

- Proceed with the firmware upgrade as instructed.
- When the firmware upgrade is finished, type "sudo arp -d [ip-address]" to delete your previously created ARP entry.

Note: For more information about ARP, visit the Apple Developer Documentation.
Upgrading The Boot Loader.
An alternate method to resolve the issue, is to upgrade the firmware by using only a Web Browser, and not using a TFTP server.
- First, you need to upgrade to Firmware version 1.0.0.2.
- Then go to Switch_IP_address/loader_upg.cgi (i.e http://192.168.0.239/loader_upg.cgi).
- Then you can upgrade the boot loader to 1.0.0.1.
- After this the TFTP server is no longer required, and you can upgrade to the latest firmware version.
