Starting with Java 7 update 51, trying to run some Java applications may give you one of a few errors:

  • Java applications are blocked by your security settings
  • Missing Application-Name manifest attribute
  • Missing required Permissions manifest attribute in main jar

Oracle has enhanced security in Java to make systems less vulnerable to certain exploits. Java no longer allows you to run applications that are unsigned/not signed, created with self-signed certificate, or the application is missing a new attribute.

This is currently known to affect a wide variety of NETGEAR products and services, including but not limited to:

  • ReadyNAS Vault
  • ProSAFE Wireless Controllers (planning tool)
  • ProSAFE Switches (device view)

Until these services are updated to run with the latest Java, you can use the Exception Site list feature to run the applications blocked by security settings. Adding the URL of the blocked application to the Exception Site list allows it to run with some warnings. For more information about adding the site of your product to the Exception Site list, visit Java's Exception Site list KB
