It is possible to recover the data from the volume on your legacy ReadyNAS using your new OS 6 chassis. It is important you follow the below instructions.
What you will need to access your data:
- The RAID from your legacy NAS must be in working order for the data to be recovered.
- If the RAID is broken it may require further analysis from Technical Support and the data may not be recoverable.
- Disks from the legacy ReadyNAS
- ReadyNAS OS 6 chassis
- One spare blank disk
- An alternate location to where the data can be transferred (i.e., External USB HD, network share, another NAS device).
- Note: the alternate location MUST have enough capacity to accomodate the data coming from the volume of the legacy ReadyNAS.
Accessing the data
- Insert the spare blank disk into the ReadyNAS OS 6 chassis
- Reset to factory defaults. Follow this guide to access the boot menu
- Perform a firmware update of your ReadyNAS.
- Shut down the ReadyNAS OS 6 chassis.
- Remove the disk used to perform the firmware update on the NAS.
- Insert the disks from your legacy ReadyNAS into the ReadyNAS OS 6 chassis.
- Boot the ReadyNAS OS 6 device.
The ReadyNAS OS 6 will boot RAIDIator software, bringing up Frontview, along with your data, in read-only mode. You can now access your data and backup it up to the alternate location.
You can contact Support and log a support ticket to gain further assistance in accessing your data. Support will advise if data recovery is required. It is important you do not attempt an OS reinstall or Factory Reset as this may result in unexpected data loss.
Once the data is made available using the ReadyNAS OS 6 device, the following actions can be taken:
- Copy off all the data to the alternate location.
- Shut off the ReadyNAS
- Access the boot menu to initiate a factory default with the disks you want to use installed.
- Restore data to the new volume from the alternate location's data dump. See our Backup FAQ for ways to accomplish this.
The method to bring the data online inside the ReadyNAS OS 6 device only allows for the data to become accessible to be copied to an alternate location.
