NETGEAR is aware of an issue with activity LED being constantly solid on ReadyNAS 3130/3138 chassis.
In order to properly identify this specific issue as the one you're experiencing, you must meet the following criteria:
- Solid Activity LED instead of blinking.
- No reports of errors on disk.
- Persists reboot and might not be consistent between chassis.
- We have noticed this issue in the following disk model(s), but it could affect more:
- ST6000NM0024
- WD100EFAX
How does this issue occur?
- ReadyNAS 3130/3138 backplane use pin 11 to determine disk light activity.
- Hard drive manufacturers recently made hard drive design change that places a strong pull down resistor on Pin 11.
- As such, ReadyNAS 3130/3138 backplane's pin 11 does not anticipate the aformentioned pull down.
- The signal effectively equals "Active" resulting in partial ON with the activity LED.
What can I do about the solid activity LED?
- The root cause of this issue is due to the change in design of hard drives by manufacturers and relying on a non-existent host controller's pull up resistor to accurately report the activity.
- This issue does not affect performance or usability of the ReadyNAS product.
- If necessary, you may cover the LED lights on the disk trays while using any aformentioned drive.
