- What is the difference between Local and Cloud based Replicate?
With Cloud based Replicate, each ReadyDATA must be joined to the ReadyDATA Replicate Portal, where all Replicate jobs will be managed. In order to join the ReadyDATA to the Portal, the ReadyDATA will require an active connection to the Internet. In cases where the ReadyDATAs are located on different networks, Cloud based Replicate will facilitate the forming of a P2P connection between source and destination ReadyDATA devices, so the data can be transferred. In this method the data will be transferred through a secure connection over the Internet between the ReadyDATAs. If however the ReadyDATAs are joined to the Portal, but are located within the same local area network (LAN) then the data is transferred over the LAN.
Local based Replicate is configured and managed from the web GUI of the ReadyDATAs. Local based Replicate does not use P2P. The ReadyDATA devices must be located within the same LAN or a VPN must be present connecting the ReadyDATAs together. In this mode the ReadyDATAs do not need an active connection to the Internet. Local based replicate will always use the LAN (or an existing VPN connection if present) and no data is passed over the Internet via P2P. Each ReadyDATA that will be used in Local based Replicate must use firmware version 1.4.0 or above.
- How do I setup Cloud based Replicate?
Cloud based Replicate is setup by joining each ReadyDATA device to the ReadyDATA Replicate Portal - https://readydata.netgear.com
Please see here for an article which provides a step by step guide on joining a ReadyDATA to the Replicate Portal.

- How do I setup Local Replicate?
Local based Replicate is configured and managed from the web GUI of the ReadyDATAs.
Each ReadyDATA that will be used in Local based Replicate, must use firmware version 1.4.0 or above.
First you need to exchange certificates between the source and destination ReadyDATA devices. This is further outlined in the User manual at page 221.
To configure a job in Local Replicate please see the user manual at page 223.
The user manual is available here https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RD5200/ReadyDATA%20OS%20SW%20UM-08.pdf
- What is P2P?
P2P is an acronym for Peer to Peer. It refers to computer systems that communicate to each other through a network, without passing through a central server. P2P allows for the ReadyDATAs to establish a secure link between each other, so data can be transferred between the devices.
- Should I use compression?
It is recommended to use compression on Replicate jobs where the data transfer will happen via the WAN as it can increase the speed of data transfer and it can potentially save on bandwidth usage.
Note that when compression is used in a Replicate job, the data is sent compressed over the WAN link. However the data is not stored compressed on the destination after the transfer, unless it was already compressed on the source share or LUN.
- What are the implications of enabling Show Job Progress when creating a Replicate job?
Enabling Show Job Progress allows you to see the progress of the job when it is running. It will cause the job to take a longer time to complete because the system must first calculate how much data must be transferred. If you want to reduce the time taken for the job to complete, then do not enable Show Job Progress when creating the Replicate job.
- Can I edit Replicate jobs?
At this time it is possible to edit Replicate jobs that are Cloud based, however it is not possible to edit local based Replicate jobs.
- For Cloud based Replicate jobs, how can I change the email address to which job reports are sent?
First log in to the associated ReadyNAS Remote account by going to https://remote.readynas.com/. Log in to this page using the same username and password which was used to join the ReadyDATA to the Replicate Portal. Once logged in, click 'View your profile' and then click 'Edit Account Information'. From here, change the email address as required and click 'Update Account'. Now log out of that page. Finally, log in to the ReadyDATA Replicate Portal at https://readydata.netgear.com (this is needed to trigger the update to the email address).
- If I have three ReadyDATA systems, can I replicate a share (or LUN) from ReadyDATA #1 to ReadyDATA #2 and then from ReadyDATA #2 to ReadyDATA #3?
No. A share (or LUN) can only be part of one Replicate job with one source and one destination. This means that it can only be replicated from ReadyDATA #1 to ReadyDATA #2 for example.
