All new NETGEAR routers are set up with a WiFi network name (SSID) and network key (password) out of the box. We strongly recommend that you keep a password enabled, but there are certain scenarios where you might not want to use one. You can disable your WiFi password from the router web interface.
Disabling your router's password leaves it open for any device to connect to and vulnerable to cyberattacks. You should only disable the password of your router in special situations. Some examples of when you might want to disable the pasword:
- The router is meant to be a free public WiFi hotspot.
- You need to turn the password off temporarily to troubleshoot an issue.
To disable the WiFi network key (password) on your NETGEAR router:
- Launch a web browser from a computer or mobile device that is connected to your router’s network.
- Enter http://www.routerlogin.net.
A login window displays. - Enter the router user name and password.
The user name is admin. The password is the one that you specified the first time that you logged in. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
The BASIC Home or Dashboard page displays. - Select ADVANCED > Setup > Wireless Setup.
- For each WiFi band, under Security Options, choose None.
- Click Apply to save the changes.
Your wireless network is open for any wireless device to connect to.
Each WiFi band that your router supports can have a password enabled or disabled individually, except for the 6 GHz band on supported models. 6 GHz WiFi requires WPA3 security to function, and cannot be used without a password.
