While using a NETGEAR USB wireless adapter, such as the A6100, A6200, or WNDA4100, the speed and range are not to the level needed for optimal use. There are many factors that can affect the speeds of USB wireless adapters, but there are also several solutions that can be effective depending on the initial situation.
To troubleshoot the speed of your NETGEAR USB wireless adapter:
Adjust the location of the adapter relative to the router.
Sometimes, moving closer to the main router, or changing your position in the room can affect signal strength and wireless speeds. The configuration of your room and the location of the router being different in every setup, will result in a different spot for each setup.
Use a NETGEAR wireless extender.
If you are trying to cover a longer distance, the USB adapter may not provide the desired signal strength. A NETGEAR wireless extender, such as the WN1000RP for light use, or the EX6200 for the longest range and heaviest use, can provide a stronger connection at longer distances than connecting directly to the main router Wi-Fi.
Check for the latest updates and drivers.
Make sure your extender is running the latest NETGEAR firmware as this will ensure the best performance and reliability. Some adapters, depending on the OS used, will also have special drivers -- an example would be the A6100 or A6200 when using Windows 8 or 8.1. You can search the NETGEAR support site for your model and the proper software needed.
Check the wireless security encryption of your router.
Security encryption of a wireless network greatly affects the speed of the connection. Make sure your router is configured to use the correct security encryption so that you can maximize the speed your router is capable of.
Get rid of obstacles.
If your router is inside a cabinet or otherwise obstructed, or if there are significant obstacles between the router and the device you are using with the adapter, try moving these obstructions to improve your signal strength.
Use Windows to increase the power that is being sent to your wireless adapter.
This is very easy to do. Simply head to the Control Panel and enter the Device Manager. Within, search for your wireless USB adapter, right click on it, and select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, you'll see an option to adjust the transmit power. Simply adjust this to the highest value.
Note: This may affect your device battery life.
Adjust the adapter with a USB extension.
Using a special USB cable that may be provided with your adapter, you can adjust the position of your adapter. The adapter will work like an antenna in that its position can affect the signal it receives. Try using this extension cable to orient your adapter to the position in which you receive the best signal. This will also prove useful when the device is used outside of the home, e.g., at a public hotspot.
