This document outlines what steps to take when any of the following error messages, ' Corrupt root', ' ERR Used Disks', 'Could not mount Root RAID',  are seen on the LCD panel, or in RAIDar in ReadyNAS OS 6.

There are various causes for these errors. It can be due to a problem with the chassis, hard disks, or with the operating system.

The most important steps are those taken after the error is seen. These are to try to recover existing data, or to proceed with configuring a new system. The steps differ significantly depending on the current configuration of the ReadyNAS.

The ReadyNAS is already configured and contains data:

If the ReadyNAS is already setup, configured and data exists on the system and you see either Corrupt root, Err Used Disks or Could not mount root Raid then please follow these steps:

  1. As a first point of troubleshooting, perform an OS reinstall as per the hardware manual for your ReadyNAS. The OS reinstall procedure is different depending on the model of ReadyNAS so ensure that you follow the correct manual. Browse to the section Boot Menu for your model of ReadyNAS and follow the instructions for performing an OS re-install.

    Desktop ReadyNAS models - RN102/104/202/204/312/314/316/516/716X

    Rackmount ReadyNAS models – RN2120/3130/3220/4220

  2. If after performing an OS re-install, you still see either of the error messages. you need to contact the local technical support team for your region. No further action should be taken on the NAS without guidance from a member of technical support.  See "Contact us" below.

You may be required at some point, to put the ReadyNAS into debug or 'tech support mode' for remote technical support. See the steps at the following article. Before attempting the Tech Support mode setup, you should be requested to do so by technical support. Please match the model of your ReadyNAS with the steps for that model before taking actions to setup Tech Support mode.

    ReadyNAS: Accessing the Boot Menu

The ReadyNAS is not already configured and is a new setup:

If you have a new ReadyNAS and you are trying to configure it for the first time and no data exists but you are using disks that were previously used for storage in another system, then you will see one of the errors Corrupt root, ERR Used Disks, Could not mount Root RAID.

  1. You need to reset the ReadyNAS to factory default with your disks inserted. This forces any existing partitions from previous use of the disks to be deleted, so the ReadyNAS can use the disks.

At this time, check the ReadyNAS Hardware Compatibility List to check if your disks are compatible with your model ReadyNAS. If the disks are not on the HCL, NETGEAR may deny support.

To perform a factory reset on your ReadyNAS refer to the hardware manual for information on accessing the Boot Menu and selecting the Factory default option. Browse to the section Boot Menu for your model of ReadyNAS and follow the instructions for performing a factory default

    Desktop ReadyNAS models - RN102/104/202/204/312/314/316/516/716X

    Rackmount ReadyNAS models – RN2120/3130/3220/4220

Note: If you are using disk(s) that were previously used in another system (for example a Windows PC, old ReadyNAS, and so forth) then performing a factory reset will wipe all data from those disks. Any data that was residing on those disks will be lost, and NETGEAR is not liable for any data lost while performing a factory default.

  2. After performing the factory default, if you still experience either error message - Corrupt root, ERR Used Disks, Could not mount Root RAID – there is still a problem with the chassis, hard disks, or the Operating system on the ReadyNAS and you need to contact Technical Support for your region for further assistance.
