This comprehensive FAQ guide can help you to understand how to set up, troubleshoot, and get the most from your NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender.

Will a NETGEAR WiFi range extender work with my existing router?
In general, NETGEAR WiFi extenders are "universal" extenders. This means that they are compatible with the vast majority of wireless routers on the market, whether purchased separately or provided by an ISP.

Note an important consideration regarding compatibility of WiFi range extenders: Some WiFi extenders operate on both the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band. If your WiFi router only supports 2.4 GHz, the extender can of course still be used, but performance may vary depending on which band is used. Make sure to purchase the version intended for your region, to ensure compatibility with power standard and power connections and local regulations.

Where should I place my range extender?
The ideal location to place the extender is half-way between your wireless router and your computer, but the extender must be within the wireless range of the wireless router. What are the default user name and password to log in to the range extender's web interface (www.mywifiext.net)?
You can use the following to log in:
Username: admin
Password: password

Installation setup for my range extender keeps asking me for my wireless password and I am sure I have entered the correct password. What can I do?

  • It is likely that your extender is placed at the borderline of the signal range covered by your main WiFi router. Moving your extender closer to the main WiFi router will most likely resolve this.
  • If you are using WEP legacy security, make sure that you are typing the wireless key in the correct field.

Why do I always need to have the latest firmware on my NETGEAR product?
Having the latest firmware will help increase the stability, functionality, and performance of your product. The new and most up-to-date firmware will likely correct issues as well as potentially add new and improved features to the product. To find the latest firmware for your extender, visit the NETGEAR Download Center, and enter your extender's model number.

I connected to NETGEAR_EXT and launched a browser. Why can I not log in to the range extender?
First, make sure that your computer is set up to use DHCP (not set to a static IP address). Second, make sure that the Client Link LED (also referred to as the Device LED) is solid green, indicating that the link between the extender and your device is good, and that your device has a valid IP address. Finally, relaunch the browser and enter www.mywifiext.net, the extender's default IP address http://192.168.1.250, or the unique IP address that was assigned to the extender. For more information, see How do I log in to my WiFi Mesh Extender or Nighthawk Mesh Extender?

What can I do if the range extender disconnects when connecting to the router during setup?
Try to change the wireless settings of the router. You can also try to update the firmware of the router and the extender. To find the latest firmware for your router and extender, visit the NETGEAR Download Center, and enter your router's or extender's model number.

My router security is WEP: Can I use the WPS method to connect my range extender to my router network?
WPS supports WPA/WPA2 security, if your router is using WEP legacy security, you must use a web browser or the Nighthawk app to set your extender. For more information, see How do I set up my NETGEAR WiFi range extender?

Can I add more than one range extender to my router network?
You can have more than one extender connection to your router network. However, you cannot daisy-chain your additional extenders. Daisy-chaining is not officially supported and will affect performance for client devices connected to the second extender in the chain.

My router security is WEP, and I entered the wrong passphrase or security key on the range extender. I cannot access the extender anymore. What can I do?
The extender cannot check to see if the WEP passphrase is correct. If you entered the wrong passphrase, your wireless device cannot get the IP address from the extender. You must reset the extender to the factory defaults to get the IP address back.

I reserved IP addresses for some devices on my router, but these devices no longer work when I connect them to the range extender. What can I do?
The first three bytes of a MAC address are translated to 02:0F:B5. Log in to your router and add the translated MAC addresses to your IP address reservation list.

I have completed the steps in the NETGEAR installation assistant, but my wireless devices cannot get an IP address from the range extender. What should I do?
Make sure that the passphrase that you entered on your wireless device is correct, and restart both the extender and your router. If your device is still not able to get the IP address:

  1. Move the extender closer to your router, and move your wireless device closer to the extender.
  2. Turn off and then turn on the wireless interface on your wireless device to see if your wireless device can get an IP address.
  3. If your router has a MAC filter (wireless access control), disable it and follow the next FAQ to add the device’s MAC address to your router.

I have enabled a wireless MAC filter (wireless access control) on my router. What should I do when installing the range extender?
The MAC address of a wireless device is translated to another MAC address when the wireless device connects to the extender (see a previous FAQ in this list). To allow the wireless device to connect, you must add the translated MAC address to the router.
To get the translated MAC address:

  1. Disable the MAC filter on your router.
  2. Start the extender and connect the wireless devices to the extender.
  3. Make sure that the Client Link LED remains lit.
  4. Log in to your router and check the connected devices on the Attached Devices page.
  5. Add all MAC addresses, including virtual MAC addresses that begin with 02:0F:B5, to your router’s MAC filter table.
  6. Enable MAC filtering on your router.
