NETGEAR switches do not have a built-in real-time clock. However, you can use SNTP to get the time from a public SNTP or NTP server over the Internet. You may need permission from those public time servers. The following steps configure SNTP on a fully managed switch using the CLI, For information about configuring SNTP with the user interface (UI), or for the M4300 series, the Main UI, see How do I configure Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) using the web interface on my managed switch?
To configure SNTP using CLI commands on a fully managed switch:
- Configure the SNTP server IP address. The IP address can be either from the public SNTP or NTP server or your own server. You can search the Internet to locate the public server. The servers available could be listed in domain name format instead of IP address format. In such a case, use the ping command on your computer to find the server’s IP address. The following example configures the IP address of the SNTP server to 208.14.208.19.
(Netgear Switch) (Config)#sntp server 208.14.208.19
- After configuring the IP address, enable SNTP client mode. The client mode can be either broadcast mode or unicast mode. If the NTP server is not your own, you must use unicast mode.
(Netgear Switch) (Config)#sntp client mode unicast
- After SNTP client mode is enabled, the client waits for the polling interval to send the query to the server. The default value is approximately 1 minute. After this period, issue the
show sntp servercommand to confirm that the switch received the time. The time is used in all logging messages.
