Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping allows a switch to forward multicast traffic intelligently. Multicast IP traffic is destined to a host group. Host groups are identified by class D IP addresses, which range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255.
Based on the IGMP query and report messages, the switch forwards traffic only to the ports that request the multicast traffic. This prevents the switch from broadcasting the traffic to all ports and possibly affecting network performance.

Current NETGEAR fully managed switches support IGMP Plus mode. This mode lets you automatically configure IGMP snooping, which is used to build forwarding lists for IPv4 multicast traffic. You can also manually configure IGMP snooping.

IGMP snooping requires that one central switch or router periodically query all end-devices on the network to announce their multicast memberships. This central device is the IGMP querier. The IGMP query responses, known as IGMP reports, keep the switch updated with the current multicast group membership on a port-by-port basis. If the switch does not receive updated membership information in a timely fashion, it stops forwarding multicasts to the port where the end device is located. You can configure and display information for IGMP snooping queriers on the network and, separately, on VLANs.

This article describes how you can enable the IGMP snooping querier on VLAN 1 using the main user interface on a NETGEAR fully managed switch. Using the main user interface on a NETGEAR fully managed switch, the procedure consists of the following main steps:

  1. Enable IGMP snooping globally on the switch.
  2. Enable IGMP snooping on VLAN 1.
  3. Enable the IGMP snooping querier globally on the switch.
    The IP address that you configure in this step is used if you do not configure a specific IP address for the VLAN on which queries are sent.
  4. Enable the IGMP snooping querier on VLAN 1.

To enable IGMP snooping and the IGMP snooping querier on VLAN 1:

  1. Log in to your switch:
    1. Launch a web browser and enter the IP address of the switch in the address field of your web browser.
      The login page displays.
    2. Click the Main UI Login button.
      The main UI login page displays in a new tab.
    3. Enter admin as the user name and enter one of the following passwords:
      • Enter your local device password.
        The first time that you log in, no password is required. However, you then must specify a local device password to use each subsequent time that you log in.
      • If you are managing the switch through the Engage controller, enter the site password for the Engage site to which the switch is onboarded.
      • If, in addition to the main UI, you are also managing the switch through the Insight Cloud Portal or Insight app, enter the Insight network password for the Insight network to which the switch is added.
    4. Click the Login button.
      The System Information page displays.
  2. Enable IGMP snooping globally on the switch:
    1. Select Switching > Multicast > IGMP Snooping > Configuration.
    2. Select the Admin Mode Enable radio button.
      This selection enables the administrative mode for IGMP snooping for the switch.
    3. Click the Apply button.
      Your settings are saved.
  3. Enable IGMP snooping on VLAN 1:
    1. Select Switching > Multicast > IGMP Snooping > IGMP Snooping VLAN Configuration.
    2. Select the VLAN ID 1 check box.
    3. From the Admin Mode menu, select Enable.
      Note: You can leave all other settings at their default values.
    4. Click the Apply button.
      Your settings are saved.
  4. Enable the IGMP snooping querier globally on the switch:
    1. Select Switching > Multicast > IGMP Snooping > Querier Configuration.
    2. Select the Querier Admin Mode Enable radio button.
    3. In the Snooping Querier IP Address field, type 10.10.10.1.
    4. Click the Apply button.
      Your settings are saved.
  5. Enable the IGMP snooping querier on VLAN 1:
    1. Select Switching > Multicast > IGMP Snooping > Querier VLAN Configuration.
    2. Select the VLAN ID 1 check box.
    3. From the Querier Election Participate Mode menu, select Enable.
      Note: Unless you type an IP address in the Querier VLAN Address field, the switch will use IP address 10.10.10.1, which you configured in Step 4.
    4. Click the Apply button.
      Your settings are saved.
