Overview

This article will help you troubleshoot a NETGEAR wireless adapter that is not getting detected by your computer.

Symptoms

  • LED will not light up on the adapter.
  • "Found New Hardware" wizard does not come up.
  • Installer cannot detect the adapter

Causes:

  1. The Operating System on the computer might not support the Plug & Play feature or need latest system updates.
  2. The USB port or PCI slot on the computer might be faulty.
  3. Extension cable (if being used) that connects the USB adapter and the computer might be faulty.
  4. The adapter drivers do not support the Operating system.

Resolution:

  1. Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements for the adapter and have the latest updates on the computer. Uninstall any antivirus you have since it interferes with the detection process. You can install the antivirus again once the adapter is detected.
  2. Use the latest driver for the adapter. Latest drivers can be found on NETGEAR download page.
  3. Try a different USB port or PCI slot on the computer.
  4. Try another device and check if it gets detected.
  5. Try to connect the adapter directly to the computer without using an extension cable.
  6. Try restarting the computer or try adapter on a different computer.
  7. If you still have an issue with the adapter, please contact NETGEAR support.
