The following WiFi 6 Orbi routers using firmware version 4.6.X.X or older are affected by an issue that makes them unable to auto-update their firmware:

  • RBR750
  • RBR840
  • RBR850

To fix this issue, your Orbi WiFi System must be manually upgraded to the most recent firmware.

Upgrade the firmware on your Orbi satellites before upgrading the firmware on your Orbi router. This ensures that your router can find and connect to your satellites after upgrading.

To manually upgrade the firmware on affected models:

  1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to your Orbi network.
  2. Visit the following product pages to download the firmware for your affected Orbi router and satellites:
  3. Scroll down to the Firmware and Software Downloads section.
  4. Click the Download button to the right of the Orbi Router firmware marked LATEST.
A .zip file with the latest Orbi router firmware downloads.
  5. Click the Download button to the right of the Orbi Satellite firmware marked LATEST.
A .zip file with the latest Orbi satellite firmware downloads.
  6. Locate the two .zip files on your computer’s hard drive.
  7. Unzip both files and note the locations of the two .chk files on your hard drive.
  8. Enter orbilogin.net or 192.168.1.1 (the default IP address) into your web browser.
    A login window displays.
  9. Enter the Orbi admin user name and password.
The default user name is admin. The password is the one you specified when you set up your Orbi. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
    The BASIC Home page displays.
  10. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Firmware Update > Manual Update.
    The Firmware Update page displays.
  11. Select the check box next to your satellite’s model name.
If you have more than one satellite, only update one satellite at a time. You must wait for the first satellite to finish updating before updating the next satellite.
  12. Click the Update button.
The Orbi satellite Firmware Update window opens.
  13. If the browser asks you for the admin password, enter the same password that you entered for the router.
  14. Click the BROWSE button.
  15. Locate and select the satellite firmware file that you unzipped. The satellite firmware file name starts with RBS and ends in .chk.
  16. Click the Upload button.
It takes a few minutes to complete the process.
  17. After the Orbi satellite finishes updating, select Status and double-check the firmware version on the Status page.
The firmware on your Orbi satellite is updated.
  18. Repeat Steps 10-17 for the rest of your Orbi satellites.
  19. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Firmware Update > Manual Update.
    The Firmware Update page displays.
  20. Click the BROWSE button.
  21. Locate and select the router firmware file that you unzipped. The router firmware file name starts with RBR and ends in .chk.
  22. Click the Upload button.
The firmware update starts and the router restarts. The firmware update process takes about two minutes.
After you start the firmware update, do not try to go online, turn off the router, or do anything else to the router until it finishes restarting.

Your Orbi WiFi System is updated.
