To help support a more secure and resilient network environment, NETGEAR recommends the following best practices for managing legacy ProSAFE routers:
- Replace default administrative credentials with strong, unique passwords.
- Install the latest firmware updates to ensure devices are protected with current security patches.
- Retire End of Service (EOS) or End of Life (EOL) routers that no longer receive updates or support.
Using ProSAFE routers with default credentials or outdated firmware may be more vulnerable to unauthorized access by malicious actors.
What you need to do
If you are using a ProSAFE router and have not changed the default password or have not updated the firmware to the latest version, we strongly urge you to do so immediately. Default credentials are widely known and can be exploited by malicious actors. The latest firmware releases address vulnerabilities that could expose your network to unauthorized access or remote code execution.
To update your ProSAFE router's firmware:
- Visit NETGEAR Support.
- Start typing your model number in the search box, then select your model from the drop-down menu as soon as it appears.
If you do not see a drop-down menu, make sure that you entered your model number correctly, or select a product category to browse for your product model. - Click Downloads.
- Under Current Versions, select the download whose title begins with Firmware Version.
- Click Download.
- Follow the instructions in your product’s user manual, firmware release notes, or product support page to install the new firmware.
To update your password:
- Log in to your ProSAFE router's web configuration manager
Depending on your specific model, click one of the following:
- Administration > Set Password
- Users > Local Authentication
- Users > Users
- Change the default password to a strong, unique password.
- Click Apply.
Your password is saved.
