A standalone wireless access point (AP) is an access point which is not managed by NETGEAR Insight or a NETGEAR wireless controller.
In standalone AP deployments, WiFi roaming is dependent on the Wi-Fi client(s). This includes when the client decides to roam and to what AP it roams to.
To help clients achieve better roaming performance, refer to the following steps:
- Site survey: Conduct a site survey using a WiFi analyzer to ensure you have a strong signal (better than -70dBm) at all locations. At transition points, the new AP signal should be better by -8 dBm. WiFi analyzers are readily available on all common operating systems for mobile devices and laptops.
- Number and placement of APs: Add additional APs or move existing APs to ensure uniform coverage better than -70dBm.
- Consistent configurations: Ensure all APs have identical configurations, including SSID name(s), security types, security passphrases and radio settings.
- Enable 802.11KV: If supported on your APs, enable 802.11KV for the SSID(s) to help improve roaming performance.
- Higher data rates: Set a higher data rate for the SSID to encourage sticky clients to roam faster.
If your WiFi clients are Apple devices, see the below article for further information on WiFi roaming in Apple devices.
