Yes, for most NETGEAR home networking devices, we recommend that customers protect their investment in NETGEAR equipment from electrical outages and surges. Review the important warnings and information below.
NETGEAR Powerline Networking devices are the only products where NETGEAR does not recommend using power strips, surge protectors, UPS, or extension cords. These devices can filter out some or all of the high frequency signals used in Powerline Networking communications. Connecting a Powerline Networking device to one of these devices can greatly reduce the data rate of transfers, or block communications entirely.
Risk of fire, injury, and electric shock. Do not use NETGEAR equipment outdoors unless its documentation states that it is designed for outdoor use. Improper outdoor use of NETGEAR equipment can lead to hardware damage, data loss, or network outage, and will void your warranty.
To avoid the risk of fire, injury, or electric shock, you must use surge protection if any part of your NETGEAR equipment’s cable run or power cabling is outdoors or if any connected devices are located outdoors. Failure to do so can lead to hardware damage, data loss, or network outage.
You can protect your NETGEAR equipment from electrical outages and surges using the following methods:
- Structural lightning protection
- Grounding and bonding systems
- Surge-protection devices for power lines and power outlets, coaxial cables, telephone lines, Ethernet cables, and other cabling
- Uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) and generators
We also recommend that customers follow the guidelines in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology Equipment.
If you decide to use an Ethernet surge protector, make sure that you purchase a surge protector that supports the same speeds as your NETGEAR device. For example, if your device supports 1 Gbps speeds, your surge protector must also support 1 Gbps speeds.
