One of the most important factors for optimizing your WiFi network's performance is the location of your wireless access point (AP). Use the following tips to determine the best location for your wireless AP.
- Put your wireless AP near the center of the intended coverage area.
- Placing or mounting your wireless AP in a higher location can reduce the number of obstacles between your wireless AP and client devices.
- Minimize the number of walls and large objects between your wireless AP and client devices.
- Keep your wireless AP away from large metal, stone, and glass surfaces which can block WiFi signals. Examples include brick or concrete walls, solid metal doors, fish tanks, and mirrors.
- Keep your wireless AP away from sources of interference, such as cordless phones, wireless keyboards and mice, baby monitors, microwaves, ceiling fans, and home security systems.
- Make sure that the top of your wireless AP is facing your client devices. For example, if you mount your AP on the ceiling, the top of the AP points towards the floor.
- If your wireless AP covers a large area, consider adding additional APs or using a mesh network for better coverage. For more information, see What's a mesh WiFi system?.
- If your AP is a satellite in a mesh WiFi network, make sure that the satellite AP and root AP or router have a clear line of sight between them.
