We recommend that you place all APM402XL port cards using 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver (txcvr) modules in the upper slots (1 to 6) of your NETGEAR M4300-96X. 40GBASE-LR4 txcvr modules use more energy and produce more heat than other module types. The M4300-96X's upper slots provide the best cooling and optimal thermal conditions.
APM402XL port cards with 40GBASE-LR4 txcvr modules can be used in the lower slots, but the additional heat might reduce the service life of the installed modules. APM402XL port cards with any other module type, such as 40GBASE-CR4, can be used in any slot in the M4300-96X.
If your M4300-96X uses both APM402XL port cards with 40GBASE-LR4 txcvr modules and APM408P PoE+ port cards, the APM408P port cards must go in the top slots. We recommend placing the APM402XL port cards in the remaining open top slots, then filling the bottom slots.
