If your Insight Managed wireless access point (AP) uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) instead of a connection to a power outlet, make sure that your power sourcing equipment (PSE) meets or exceeds your wireless AP's PoE requirements.

For more information about PoE, see What is PoE? (Power over Ethernet).

The following table shows the power usage and suggested PSE PoE class for several Insight-managed wireless APs:

Wireless AP Max Power Consumption (W) Suggested PSE Minimum PoE Class
WAX610/WAX610Y 15.5 PoE+ (802.3at)
WAX615/WAX618 21.2 PoE+ (802.3at)
WAX620 25.5 PoE+ (802.3at)
WAX625/WAX628 21.2 PoE+ (802.3at)
WAX630 30.1 PoE++ (802.3bt)
WAX630E 27.6 PoE++ (802.3bt)
WBE750/WBE758 39 PoE++ (802.3bt)

If the power LED on your wireless AP is solid green, your PSE meets your wireless AP's power requirements and the wireless AP operates normally.

If the power LED on your wireless AP is solid amber, your PSE does not meet your wireless AP's power requirements. Your wireless AP might have reduced performance, such as lower transmit (Tx) power or limited bandwidth. The following table shows how your PSE's PoE class affects your wireless AP's performance and coverage:

AP PoE (802.3af) PoE+ (802.3at) PoE++ (802.3bt)
WAX610/WAX610Y Max throughput reduced to 60% of normal. AP operates normally. AP operates normally.
WAX615/WAX618 Max throughput reduced to 60% of normal. AP operates normally. AP operates normally.
WAX620 2.4 GHz band limited to 2x2 streams. 5 Ghz band limited to 2x2 streams. AP operates normally. AP operates normally.
WAX625/WAX628 5 GHz radio disabled. AP operates normally. AP operates normally.
WAX630 All radios disabled. 2.4 GHz band limited to 2x2 streams. 5 Ghz low band limited to 2x2 streams. 5 Ghz high band not affected. AP operates normally.
WAX630E All radios disabled. 2.4 Ghz radio operates at 50% x power. 5 Ghz and 6 Ghz bands not affected. AP operates normally.
WBE750/WBE758 All radios disabled. 2.4 GHz band is limited to 2x2 streams. 5 Ghz and 6 Ghz bands are limited to 3x3 streams and there is 3dB reduction in TX power. AP operates normally.

If your PSE does not provide sufficient power, your wireless AP's real-world throughput might be reduced by up to 25% and coverage might be reduced by up to 20%. To compensate for the reduction in coverage:

  • Add additional wireless APs. We recommend that every spot of WiFi coverage have an overlap of strong WiFi signals from multiple wireless APs.
  • Perform a post-install site survey to optimize wireless AP locations and radio frequency (RF) settings, such as Tx power and channels used. We recommend using Ekahau and Netspot WiFi analysis tools for site surveys.
