Remote Management is a feature included with some NETGEAR products that lets you connect to your router or gateway over the Internet to change router web interface settings when you are not at home. Most people do not need to use this feature, and it is turned off by default.
Newer NETGEAR products are compatible with the Nighthawk and Orbi apps, which provide the Anywhere Access feature as a more secure alternative to Remote Management. The Remote Management feature on your router or gateway web user interface opens an external port. The Anywhere Access feature in the Nighthawk and Orbi apps uses a secure, authenticated connection through the NETGEAR Cloud and does not open any ports.
Due to low usage of the Remote Management feature and the stronger security provided by Anywhere Access, we are removing the Remote Management feature from most NETGEAR routers with firmware updates. If you use Remote Management, we recommend that you install the Nighthawk or Orbi app on your mobile device and use Anywhere Access instead.
