NETGEAR Fully Managed switches support the following reserved multicast addresses.
| MAC address | Target Multicast IP | Protocol Description |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:05 | 224.0.0.5 | Use the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) All OSPF Routers address to send Hello packets to all OSPF routers on a network segment. |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:06 | 224.0.0.6 | Use the OSPF All Designated Routers (DR) address to send OSPF routing information to designated routers on a network segment. |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:09 | 224.0.0.9 | Use the Routing Information Protocol (RIP) version 2 group address to send routing information to all RIP2-aware routers on a network segment. |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:12 | 224.0.0.18 | Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:6B | 224.0.0.107 | Precision Time Protocol (PTP) version 2 peer delay measurement messaging |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:FB | 224.0.0.251 | Multicast DNS (mDNS) address |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:FC | 224.0.0.252 | Link-local Multicast Name Resolution (LLMNR) address |
| 01:00:5E:00:01:01 | 224.0.1.1 | Network Time Protocol (NTP) clients listen on this address for protocol messages when operating in multicast mode. |
| 01:00:5E:00:01:81 - 01:00:5E:00:01:84 | 224.0.1.129 - 224.0.1.132 | Precision Time Protocol (PTP) version 1 messages (Sync, Announce, and so on) except peer delay measurement |
| 01:00:5E:7F:FF:FA - 01:00:5E:7F:FF:FD | 239.255.255.250 - 239.255.255.253 | Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP), Service Location Protocol (SLP) version 2, and other Discovery protocol address |
| 01:00:5E:00:00:E6 -01:00:5E:00:00:E9 | 224.0.0.230 - 224.0.0.233 | Reserved for Dante AV. These addresses are HW forwarded. |
| 91:E0:F0:01:00:00 | N/A | IEEE1722 |
The IGMP snooping configuration changes multicast behavior.
When you enable IGMP snooping, multicast behaves as follows:
- Multicast traffic sent to a reserved address is flooded to the VLAN.
- Multicast traffic sent to an unknown multicast address (traffic without IGMP join) is dropped.
When you disable IGMP snooping, multicast behaves as follows:
- Multicast traffic sent to a reserved address is flooded to the VLAN.
- Multicast traffic sent to an unknown multicast address (traffic without IGMP join) is flooded to the VLAN.
