NETGEAR is aware of multiple security vulnerabilities on the BR200 and BR500. In order to be exploited, these vulnerabilities require the computer managing the router to visit a malicious website or click a malicious link while accessing the router's management GUI. Due to technical limitations outside of our control, we are unable to fix these vulnerabilities. While there are no true workarounds, you can mitigate your possible exposure by doing the following:

  • Isolate the network using virtual local area networks (VLANs) for enhanced security.
  • Utilize the router's MAC access control lists to restrict router management to specific computers.
  • Make sure that the computer used to access the router's management GUI is security hardened with anti-virus, anti-malware, and anti-phishing software.
  • Do not visit any unknown or suspicious links either in a browser or email client.
  • Close all other browser tabs other than the router's management GUI.
  • Make sure that you log out when you are not actively managing your router.

To log out of your BR200 or BR500:

  1. Click the log out icon The log out icon, a semi-circle with an arrow exiting out of it. at the upper right of the router's management GUI page.
  2. Make sure the router's management GUI displays Thank you for using the NETGEAR Web-based Router Configuration Utility.

Best Practices for Updating Firmware

We recommend that you keep your NETGEAR devices up to date with the latest firmware. Firmware updates contain security fixes, bug fixes, and new features for your NETGEAR products.

If your product is supported by one of our apps, using the app is the easiest way to update your firmware:

  • Orbi products: NETGEAR Orbi app
  • NETGEAR WiFi routers: NETGEAR Nighthawk app
  • Some NETGEAR Business products: NETGEAR Insight app (firmware updates through the app are available only for Insight subscribers)

If your product is not supported by one of our apps, you can always update your firmware manually by following the instructions in your product’s user manual, firmware release notes, or product support page. For more information, see Where can I find information about my NETGEAR product?.
