Multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) is a feature introduced midway through the WiFi 5 generation as part of the IEEE 802.11ac Wave 2 standard. MU-MIMO operates in the downstream direction (broadcaster to client) and allows an WiFi router or access point to transmit to multiple client devices simultaneously. While MU-MIMO provides a situational performance benefit to many devices, it can in rare cases cause connection instability for older devices. Depending on the age of your router or access point and the installed firmware version, MU-MIMO might or might not be enabled by default. We recommend enabling MU-MIMO unless you experience connection issues with it turned on.

To enable or disable MU-MIMO on your NETGEAR router:

  1. Launch a web browser from a device that is connected to your router’s network.
  2. Enter www.routerlogin.net.
    A login screen displays.
  3. Enter the router user name and password.
    The BASIC Home page or Dashboard displays.
    The user name is admin. The password is the one that you specified the first time that you logged in. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
  4. Select ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings.
    Some models might use slightly different menu labels, like Settings > Advanced Settings > Wireless Setup.

  5. Clear the Enable MU-MIMO check box to disable MU-MIMO, or select the checkbox to enable MU-MIMO.
  6. Click or tap Apply.
    Your settings are saved.
