If you need to install your NETGEAR router with a wide area network (WAN) connection type other than DHCP, you might not be able to use the Nighthawk app.
Most NETGEAR router installations use the DHCP WAN connection type. DHCP is the default WAN connection type that the NETGEAR Nighthawk app uses for installation, and it does not require any advanced setup. If you're not sure which WAN connection type your router needs to be set up with, you probably use DHCP, and can use the Nighthawk app.
The Nighthawk app also supports Static IP and PPPoE WAN connection types. To install your router with a Static IP or PPPoE WAN connection through the Nighthawk app, tap Advanced Setup after the app detects your router and fails to detect the Internet. Then, select your connection type and follow the prompts to proceed with installation.
The Nighthawk app does not support some uncommon WAN connection types and advanced network configurations. You must use the router web interface instead of the Nighthawk app to install your router if your installation requires any of the following:
- L2TP WAN connection
- PPTP WAN connection
- DHCP option 60/61
- VLAN configuration
- IPv6 internet connection
