What is two-factor authentication (2FA) and why might I want to enable it for my NETGEAR account?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) refers to the use of two different methods (factors) to verify (authenticate) someone’s identity when they try to access a secured resource like an account, device, or service.

2FA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring more than a user name and password to gain access. It’s more difficult for cybercriminals to gain access to accounts that use 2FA, as they can usually only provide one factor required to authenticate. For example, a cybercriminal might obtain someone’s user name and password in a data leak, but it’s unlikely that they would also gain physical access to someone’s personal device to provide the second factor for a 2FA-enabled account.

If you enable 2FA for your NETGEAR account, you must enter your account user name and password as the first factor. NETGEAR then sends a push notification or a code via SMS to your chosen device that you must enter as the second factor. When the two factors are satisfied, your identity is authenticated and you can access your account.

We recommend that you enable 2FA to provide increased security for your NETGEAR account. For more information, see How do I set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for my NETGEAR account using the Nighthawk or Orbi app?
