Your M4250 switch comes with internal fans that can automatically increase their fan speed and either halt PoE or block traffic if your switch's temperature gets too high. Depending on the detected temperature and PoE budget, your fans can go immediately from Off mode to Cool mode and then to Quiet mode. The fans support the following modes:
- Off
- The fans are off.
- The fans produce no noise.
- The fans can be manually set to Off mode.
- In this mode, the switch automatically manages the fans and can turn on the fans or gradually increase the fans speed if either the temperature detected by the temperature sensor exceeds its threshold or a PoE budget is exceeded.
- Quiet
- Quiet mode is the default mode.
- In this mode, The fans function from 25 to 75 percent speed.
- Fans can reach up to 100 percent speed.
- The fans can run at 25 percent speed to produce minimal noise.

The fan noise increases at 50 percent speed and even more so at 75 percent speed.
- In this mode, the switch automatically manages the fans and can turn on the fans or gradually increase the fans speed if either the temperature detected by the temperature sensor exceeds its threshold or a PoE budget is exceeded.
- This mode supports a higher use of the PoE budget than Off mode, so the temperature threshold for Quiet mode is lower than for Off mode.
- Cool
- The fans function at 100 percent speed.
- The fans produce considerable noise.
