Several NETGEAR apps use client-to-server security solutions like PingOne to provide two-factor authentication (2FA). As of March 31, 2020, PingOne no longer supports TLS (Transport Layer Security) versions 1.0 and 1.1.
Android versions below 5.0 use TLS 1.0 or 1.1.
If your phone or tablet is running an Android version earlier than 5.0 and you have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled in your NETGEAR account, you might not be able to access the Nighthawk, Orbi, or Insight apps after March 31, 2020.
What is TLS and why are these older versions no longer supported?
TLS is an Internet authentication protocol that enables secure communication between devices and servers. NETGEAR’s Nighthawk, Orbi, and Insight apps rely on TLS to provide 2FA.
The current version of TLS (1.3) offers the latest in encryption technology. Using the latest version means that your data remains private and secure. To protect your data when using NETGEAR apps, we recommend that you follow the advice in the following section.
What should I do to access NETGEAR apps on my Android device?
Check your current Android version and upgrade to the latest version (10.0) using the following link: https://support.google.com/android/answer/7680439?hl=en. If you are unable to upgrade to the latest Android version, the only way to continue using the NETGEAR’s Nighthawk, Orbi, and Insight apps is to disable 2FA in your NETGEAR account before March 31, 2020.
