Ethernet port aggregation between two devices allows your devices to treat multiple Ethernet links as if they were a single link. Combining two network connections for LAN aggregation allows you to increase network bandwidth and provide network redundancy between your router and a client device if one link fails.

The client device that you connect your NETGEAR Nighthawk router to must support Ethernet port aggregation.

To set up LAN Ethernet port aggregation on your NETGEAR Nighthawk router:

  1. Launch a web browser from a device that is connected to your router's network.
  2. Enter www.routerlogin.net.
    A login window displays.
  3. Enter your user name and password.
The user name is admin. The password is the one that you specified the first time that you logged in. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
    The BASIC Home page displays.
  4. Select ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Ethernet Port Aggregation.
On some models, the navigation is ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Ethernet Settings.
The Ethernet Port Aggregation or Ethernet Settings page displays.
  5. Select the type of aggregation that your client device uses. Some routers might only support one kind of aggregation.
    • For LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol), select Enable (LACP-IEEE 802.3ad). We recommend this option if your router and client device support it.
    • For LAG (Link Aggregation Group), select Enable static LAG.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Set up Ethernet port aggregation on your client device.
Important: Do not connect the devices to each other using more than one Ethernet cable until after you set up aggregation on each device. If you form multiple connections between the two devices and neither device has loop prevention, you create a network loop. Network loops can slow or stop normal traffic on your network. For more information, see What is a network loop?
  8. Using two Ethernet cables, connect the aggregation-enabled LAN ports on your router to the aggregated ports on your client device.
Note: Depending on which router model you have, the aggregation-enabled LAN ports differ. Most routers use LAN ports 1 and 2 or ports 3 and 4, but some might use ports 4 and 5.
On the Ethernet Port Aggregation page, the Ethernet Port Aggregation Status displays Active.
Ethernet port LAN aggregation is set up.
