What is Secure Boot?
- Secure Boot is a protection mechanism that only those firmware released by NETGEAR can be loaded and executed by the CPU.
- Whenever system is powered on (rebooted), the CPU will validate the bootloader’s and firmware’s integrity. It will check the “signature” carried in the bootloader and firmware; only if the value matches the “fingerprint” burned in CPU, it will then load the bootloader, and then kernel into memory for execution. If the value mismatches, on the other hand, the device will note boot up successfully, and LED will blink indicating that the firmware is corrupted.
What are the benefits?
- Hackers or intruders are no longer able to tamper with your device by loading unapproved firmware.
- NETGEAR devices that have the Secure Boot mechanism enabled will be protected from backdoor, Trojan virus, malware, or ransomware.
What is the limitation?
- Advanced developers are no longer able to adjust or modify the firmware image based on NETGEAR’s released open source package.
Is there any impact on usability?
- No, there will be no impact on usability with Secure Boot mechanism. Your NETGEAR device will function as normal.
