Update Your Firmware

Some firmware updates include security enhancements. To improve your firewall’s security, make sure that your firewall’s firmware is up to date.

To download the latest firmware for your NETGEAR product:

  1. Visit NETGEAR Support.
  2. Start typing your model number in the search box, then select your model from the drop-down menu as soon as it appears.
    If you do not see a drop-down menu, make sure that you entered your model number correctly, or select Security to browse for your product model.
  3. Click Downloads.
  4. Under Current Versions, select the download whose title begins with Firmware Version.
  5. Click Download.
  6. Follow the instructions in your product’s reference manual to install the new firmware.
    Your product’s reference manual is available on your product’s support page under Documentation. To find the firmware upgrade instructions in your reference manual, press CTRL + F and search for the word “firmware”.

 

Install Your Own Security Certificate

NETGEAR ProSAFE VPN firewalls come preinstalled with a self-signed certificate. Self-signed certificates alert browsers of potential risk for the end user. If your firewall supports it, we recommended that you install your own certificate from a trusted certificate authority.

To install your own third-party security certificate:

  1. Choose a certificate authority.
    For more information, see https://www.thesslstore.com/new-to-ssl/which-ca-should-i-choose.aspx.
  2. Access your firewall’s reference manual:
    1. Visit NETGEAR Support.
    2. Start typing your model number in the search box, then select your model from the drop-down menu as soon as it appears.
      If you do not see a drop-down menu, make sure that you entered your model number correctly, or select Security to browse for your product model.
    3. Click Documentation.
    4. Click your product’s Reference Manual.
  3. In your reference manual, use the table of contents or the search function to locate the section about managing certificates.
    In the table of contents, look for a chapter called “Virtual Private Networking” or “Manage Users, Authentication, and VPN Certificates.”
  4. In the certificates section of your reference manual, look for instructions that mention VPN self-signed certificates, self certificates, or RSA certificates.
  5. Follow the instructions in your reference manual to complete these steps:
    1. Generate a certificate request.
      NETGEAR recommends that you use the largest key length that your device supports. Supported key lengths vary by product.

    2. Obtain a digital certificate from the certificate authority that you chose in Step 1.
    3. Upload the certificate to your firewall.
