What is the ReadyNAS Vault?
ReadyNAS Vault is a cloud backup solution pre-installed or readily available on all ReadyNAS systems as an installable application. Backup anything on your ReadyNAS to secure, offsite servers with no additional hardware to manage. ReadyNAS Vault is an added layer of protection, ideal for achieving geographic redundancy for data stored on your ReadyNAS.
How do I start using the ReadyNAS Vault?
ReadyNAS Vault will first require you to register for an account here: http://www.readynasvault.com/cloudfs/. (Free trials are available.) Which ReadyNAS models are supported?
ReadyNAS Vault comes pre-installed on most ReadyNAS models running RAIDiator 4.2, RAIDiator 5.3, or ReadyNAS OS 6. Where does ReadyNAS Vault store my data?
ReadyNAS Vault stores your offsite in the Cloud. It is maintained (at a minimum) on multiple devices across several facilities in a system designed to protect the loss of data in one of the facilities, so that even large-scale natural disasters do not pose a threat to the integrity and security of user data. While we do not disclose the exact locations of the facilities, our technical team partners with Amazon Web Services to utilize their physical infrastructure. Does ReadyNAS Vault backup an entire system or LUN?
No, ReadyNAS Vault is file-level backup. You can select specific directories to include (or exclude) and apply different rules regarding versions, archives, and scheduling to each backup job.
Since the ReadyNAS Vault transfers data to the cloud, do I need to set up any special port forwarding on the firewall?
ReadyNAS Vault uses the port 443, the standard https port. So, as long as you can browse the web securely, no new ports need to be opened.
Is ReadyNAS Vault a "high availability solution?"
No, ReadyNAS Vault is not a high availability solution. It is meant as a "disaster recovery solution." With ReadyNAS Vault, any individual file or set of files can be downloaded on ad hoc basis, as long as your data set is recent enough, you can access files without having to wait for a full local system recovery.
