ReadyNAS OS 6.8 allows admins to configure users to the admin group. The admin group allows members to login to the Admin Page, and manage the device, all without using the admin user's credentials. Users in the admin group can manage local users on the ReadyNAS, but cannot manage the built-in admin user without the admin's password. A user can use the admin group as either a primary or secondary group. A user with admin as the primary group will create files and folders permissioned with the admin group. A user with admin as a secondary group will create files and folders permissioned with the user's primary group. Depending on your environment, this may cause permission issues. When in doubt, add users as a secondary member of the admin group, rather than setting the group as primary.

Adding an existing user as a Secondary Member of the admin group

  1. From the Admin Page, click Accounts > Groups.
  2. Click on the admin group, then click Settings.
  3. Check the box on any user you would like to add to the admin group, then click Apply

Changing a user's existing Primary group to admin

  1. From the Admin Page, click Accounts > Users.
  2. Click on a user you want to edit, then click Settings.
  3. Click the Groups tab, then change the Primary Group to admin, then click Apply

Creating a new user with Primary admin group

  1. From the Admin Page, click Accounts > Users.
  2. Click New User. A dialog window appears.
  3. Enter all new user details on the Properties tab, then click the Groups tab.
  4. Change the Primary Group to admin, then click Apply.
