ReadyNAS OS 6.8 features built-in File Search capabilities. By default, File Search is disabled. File Search can search for file names as well as content within files. File Search is available for all ReadyNAS except RN102 and RN104.
Enabling File Search
To enable File Search on your ReadyNAS,
- Click System > Settings.
- Under Services, click File Search.
- Check the Enabled box, then click Apply.
File Search can also be enabled from the System > Overview screen.
Configuring File Search
With Content indexing disabled, File Search will index shares configured from the Shares tab for file metadata. With Content indexing enabled, File Search will read files from the following file extensions and make that data searchable from the Browse screen:

To clear the search index, click Reset index. All previously indexed files will be deleted and a new indexing will take place.
To pause indexing at any time, click Pause indexing. Indexing can be resumed at a later time by clicking Resume indexing.
To enable or disable indexing per share, click the Shares tab and check boxes on shares you want to index while unchecking any boxes on shares where you do not want indexing taking place. After Applying changes, File Search will automatically clean up removed shares from the index and index newly added shares.
To exclude files and folders from being searched, click the Advanced tab. A default list of file and folder names are pre-populated.
- Click the Plus sign to add a new exclusion. Type the name of what you would like excluded and click Add.
- Select an exclusion and click the Minus sign to remove an item.
How to use File Search
- From the Admin Page, click Shares > Browse.
- Click the Magnifying Glass to open the search box.
- Type your search query into the text box, then click Search.
- For more advanced options, drop down the Advanced Options.

If you've enabled Content indexing in the File Search settings, you can search the contents of files after checking the Search in content box. This will not be available if you have not already completed an indexing of content.
To filter your search results, there are several options:
- Filter by date last modified
- Filter by size (<= or >= in Megabytes)
- Filter by file types (Document, Video, Audio, Image, HTML Document, or All)
- Filter by extension
File Search via Finder on macOS
If you use macOS, File Search integrates with Spotlight on SMB and AFP connections to ReadyNAS shares. If your share is set to be indexed and is mounted on your macOS, Spotlight will not have to use additional resources to scan the share. NETGEAR recommends using SMB instead of AFP and enabling
