Motion detection is setup per-camera. There are a couple of settings to fine-tune the motion detection.

  1. Login to the Milestone Arcus for ReadyNAS software.
  2. Click Settings > Cameras, then click Configure on the camera you wish to add or change motion detection on.

Selecting motion detection type

  1. From the Camera settings, click Motion detection.
  2. Under Select motion detection type, you can choose from:
    1. VMS motion detection. This option activates motion detection on Milestone Arcus. This allows you to configure motion detection settings on Milestone Arcus itself.
    2. Built-in camera motion detection. This option means that motion detection is performed by the camera only. Motion detection settings must be configured directly on the individual camera.

Setting up a recording schedule

  1. From the Camera settings, click Recording.
  2. Under Recording schedule, you can configure continuous recording, motion recording, or do not record, based on a schedule.
  3. Milestone Arcus on ReadyNAS comes preloaded with 3 default schedules:
    1. Continuous 24x7: (records continuously 24x7); all days and times turn red.
    2. On motion 24x7:  (records motion 24x7); all days and times turn green.
    3. None 24x7: (records nothing 24x7); all days and times turn grey.
  4. You can choose to utilize one of these existing recording schedules, or customize your own recording schedule.
    1. If you create a custom schedule, you must save the schedule before it can be applied to this camera, or other cameras. 

Excluding sections from motion detection

  1. From the Camera settings, click Motion detection.
    The motion detection settings appear.
  2. If you're utilizing the VMS motion detection type, a grid overlays your camera's current image. By default, it creates a 4x3 grid.
  3. The grid dimensions can be altered to suit your specific needs. 
  4. Once you've specified the grid dimensions, selecting a square will turn it red and will be excluded from motion detection.
  5. Once you're done selecting excluded areas on your camera, click the X within Milestone Arcus on ReadyNAS to save the settings. 

Fine-tuning motion detection settings

  1. From the Camera settings, click Motion detection.
    The motion detection settings appear.
  2. Scroll down to Detection adjustments.
  3. There are 2 sliders over a color bar. 
    1. The top slider has changes detection of movement. 
    2. The bottom slider changes the sensitivity of the capture.
  4. The color bar changes based on currently visible factors.
    1. For example, if you configure high sensitivity, small changes on the camera will trigger motion detection. Switch the sensitivity to a value that does not trigger constant warnings. 
    2. If detection triggers movements, then the color bar will turn yellow or red, based on the level of activity taking place on the camera. Slide the movement detection slider to an appropriate level for your display.

Note: remember to take into consideration where your camera is located. If you have the camera always pointed at a busy street or a common walkway, it may trigger often. Also, take into account the direction the camera is facing. If the camera is pointed at the sun, camera imagery might be affected, causing bad readings for motion.
