USB ports on ReadyNAS OS 6 storage systems can be used with USB storage, Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), and (depending on which ReadyNAS you have) dually compatible with eSATA.
- You cannot connect a PC to NAS by USB.
- You cannot connect your USB printer to a ReadyNAS OS 6 for network printing natively (but Apps may be developed in the future).
- Data access by the user is only through the network Ethernet ports.
- RN100 series devices have one front port, USB version 2.0, and 2 rear ports, USB version 3.0.
- USB drives should have BTRFS, EXT2/3, FAT32 or NTFS format.
Compatibilty list:
There is no official release of compatible USB drives for the the ReadyNAS. Such a list would be difficult to administer, and keep updated. If you're having a problem, discuss it in our Community.
Questions:
- Question: Can I connect a media player via USB so that I can play videos directly rather than over the network?
Answer: No, this is not supported at this time.
- Question: Is it possible to boot into the ReadyNAS from USB drive using 3rd party software?
Answer: No, it is not. The USB port is mostly used for external USB storage.
- Question: Are UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) supported?
Answer: Yes, however only APC UPS have been tested to date. In practice, you would use the lower speed USB 2.0 port for a UPS. Other manufactuer's UPS products may work if they provide the same Application programming Interface (API) and USB Driver.ReadyNAS also supports UPS devices managed by SNMP. Further details may be obtained from the OS 6 Software manual.
